“The Rothenberg has always been more than just a place to live and work. It’s been a steady friend to each generation of our family. Part of growing up here is accepting that though we may never fully understand her, we can honour her with our efforts.”
Johannes Hasselbach
The bright red soils of the Roter Hang do more than just lend the vineyard its name. They famously give grapes grown here a distinctive mineral character that forms the structural spine for the eventual wines. If wine is created first and foremost in the vineyards, then the family understands the true value of founder Carl Gunderloch’s gift: a near-monopole position on the magnificent Rothenberg and, later, holdings in Pettenthal and Hipping.
The family and team work hard to give the wines what they need, nothing more and nothing less. The Rothenberg for its part rewards their unusually meticulous and tireless efforts in the vineyard with deep, concentrated wines of equal parts elegance and expression.
